"Small is beautiful"...I'm talking about quality tourism. Even if my 12-suite hotel runs to 40 percent capacity I will make a profit." Neville Proenca describes his hotel,Pousada Tauma, (pousada means home and Tauma is his father's name) asa boutique hotel. Its special attraction is the Ayurveda Center, professionally run by a doctor from the Institute of Ayurveda, Coimbatore, with two masseurs. There are two tables made of neem wood, and attached spine as well as steam baths. "Ayurveda is getting quite popular, with non-residents also coming to avail to the treatment," says Proenca. Treatments range from courses for seven days to three weeks.
| With a swimming pool as the hub and the sound of running water as a backdrop, the 12 one-storey suites are well scattered around the pool. Using laterite stone effectively (it reflects light), the suites have different typically Goan motifs, like the fields, the mountains, and the sea. Each suite comprises a living room with dining area, bedroom and a balcony with gardener terrace. |
The hotel, says Proenca, has evolved step by by step. It was slow progress bringing tiles from Rajasthan and furniture from old Goan houses: classy mirrors and the little fittings which are tastefully placed. The garden is alive with squirrels, and a plethora of birds from the common crow to the colorful kingfisher. So, one wakes in the morning not only to the crowing of the cock but a virtual symphony of birds, led by the cuckoo (or kogul, as it is called in Konkani).
Though Pousada Tauma is located in the heart of Calangute, it has a special ambience.
